The Department of Botany in Durgapur Government College offers undergraduate courses in Botany Honours and General. Teaching of this subject had started in this college as General course in 1997. Honours course in Botany was introduced in the year 2003 under the Headship of Dr. Nirmalendu Das. Some of the distinguished faculties, who contributed to this department in past include: Professor Satyendra Nath Bhaumik, Dr. Khondakar Zahidur Islam, Dr. Jyotsna Dhara, Debasis Pal, Kasturi Ghatak, Sibani Samanta (Mitra), Dr. Saswati Laha, Professor Benudhar Mondal, Dr. Bharati Mukhopadhyay, and Dr. Moumita Basu.Honours Graduates from this department got admitted in the leading universities of the country, like Burdwan University, Kanpur University, Annamalai University, Benaras Hindu University, etc. for MSc courses. Some of the past students are now involved in teaching profession in various schools. Many of the students have either completed their PhD work, or are now pursuing PhD in renowned universities of India.Students of this department actively participate in district science exhibition, annual exhibition of the college, annual athletic meet of the college, and in various cultural programmes and many of them have excelled in them. Educational tours to Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden (Shibpur, Howrah), different parts of Eastern Himalayas, Sundarban and tours of the college campus and adjoining areas are conducted by the faculties of the department, assisted by the members of the non-teaching staffs every year. Students are very much benefitted from these tours and can understand the subject in a better way.

Courses Offered: The Department offers undergraduate honours course, undergraduate program and undergraduate generic course. Curriculum and syllabus of these courses is under CBCS under the affilation of Kazi Nazrul University, Asansol.

Resources:Departmental Library consists of 234 books of both Indian and foreign authors about the various disciplines of Botany. It contains both rare books that are out of the market now-a-days and also books of recent edition.The department is well equipped with necessary instruments for smooth running of the existing courses. Other instruments and lab facility for the new syllabus is under consideration. The department is equipped with computer and Internet Facilities which is utilized by both the teachers and the students.

Student Friendly initiatives:Lectures are delivered with the aid of LCD projector and overhead projector in addition to chalk and talk method. Also, students are allowed to use the departmental computer to learn from You tube videos and Power point slides available in the Internet.
