Department of Chemistry, Durgapur Government College, established in 1972, is presently one of the best centers for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in chemistry under the affiliation of the Kazi Nazrul University, Asansol. Since 1972, eminent teachers have taught in this department. Among them were Dr. Pijush Kumar Ganguly (former Director of Public Instructions, Education Directoriate, Government of West Bengal), Professor Achintya Kumar Sarkar (Recipient of Shiksha Ratna), Professor Kanailal Ghatak (Eminent Academician) and Uday Chand Ghosh (Eminent Academician). The department has cultivated significant number of researchers and teachers in its 46 year old checkered history.

Undergraduate: Since 1972, undergraduate honours and general courses are taught in this department. CBCS was introduced for undergraduate courses from the academic session 2016-17, under the affiliation of Kazi Nazrul University, Asansol. Presently, B.Sc. Honours (Chemistry) and B.Sc. Program (Chemistry) courses are offered to students by the department under the affiliation of Kazi Nazrul University, Asansol.

Post-graduate: The post-graduate course in chemistry with organic and physical specialization was introduced in the year 2008 as a post NAAC accreditation initiative under the affiliation of The University of Burdwan. From the academic session 2015 -16, post-graduate course in chemistry with Organic and Physical Specialization are offered by the department under the affiliation of Kazi Nazrul University, Asansol.

The Department ensures a good deal of faculty-student interaction and academic flexibility. Student  evaluation is ensured by continuous internal assessments throughout the year. Our students have completed and are also presently pursuing PhD. Courses in reputed institutions. Our students have been placed in reputed schools and colleges as faculty members and also in chemical industries. Hands on training on computational chemistry based on Gaussian and Gauss view software is provided to post-graduate students during term paper projects in final semesters.

Courses:

Undergraduate: The Department offers undergraduate honours course, undergraduate program and undergraduate generic course. Curriculum and syllabus of these courses is under CBCS under the affilation of Kazi Nazrul University, Asansol.

Post-graduate: The Department offers post-graduate courses with organic chemistry and physical chemistry specialization. Curriculum and syllabus of these courses is under CBCS under the affilation of Kazi Nazrul University, Asansol.

Resourses: Departmental Library consists of total 971 books (PG=400 books and 12 Journals; UG= 571 books)] are present in the seminar library of the department. Teachers and students can borrow text as well as reference books from here. This is maintained by our faculty members. The seminar library has a reading room for students. In-charge: PG: Dr. Niloy Das; UG: Dr. Tuhin Ghosh. Total five laboratories are present for 1st, 2nd and 3rd year students of honours and general/programme courses and post-graduate students. Computers (desktop and laptop) with internet connection accessible to departmental faculty and staff. Students can access computers in the departmental computer laboratory.

Student-friendly approaches/Initiatives of the Department: PowerPoint presentations with the help of LCD projectors used to demonstrate different topics; Group discussions during practical classes; PG students are taught softwares such as Chem Draw, Gaussion and Gauss view; e-book links and suggestions are provided to the students for better understanding

Some of the events organized by the department:

Students actively participates in the Inter-Departmental annual exhibition which is organized every year by the department. Theme: Increasing interest in Chemistry through simple but exciting experiments such as Sodium Flower, Chemical Volcano, CO2 as Fire-extinguisher etc; Nano technology presentation.

One Day State Level Seminar on ."Entrepreneurship in Chemistry and its Related Areas" was organized by the Department on 17.02.2017 for the enrichment of Students. Dr. Suprakash Roy, Assistant Professor of Chemical Technology, from Department of Technical Education and Training, Government of West Bengal, delivered lecture on the areas of chemistry which can be identified by the students for entrepreneurship. Specific examples were given to students where knowledge of simple basic chemistry has led people to become successful entrepreneurs.
